Drama Ideas - Grades 6/7

Since we are moving our classes online, you have a few options of projects to try. There are challenges that come with being away from your friends, but also in a way much broader possibilities. For one, you can share your work online with others, particularly if your face doesn't show! As an example, we will see a wonderful example done by Henry Bloor, one of our grade 6s.

You can also create videos, just like the ones we see on Youtube, TV or the movie screen. Acting for television is different than acting for theater.

To start, please watch the video above to get a sense of the differences between drama and video, then scroll down to check out some projects you can do.

Rubric

The rubric for our projects is very flexible.

Project Ideas

1. Making Lemonade !!! Expressing yourself through song:

To make this awesome anthem to the times we're all living, Henry Bloor wrote his original lyrics, then he chose a sick beat from Youtube, turned on record on his phone and sang, adjusting his lyrics to match the beat's rhythm and length.

Henry then uploaded the song to Youtube using the Windows 10's photo App.
Below, a simple instructional YouTube video on how you can add an image or video to your sound file so you can upload it to YouTube, as it will not take sound-only files.

This kind of project is perfect for you to help give a voice to what other people are feeling right now! The reason why we like songs so much is because we can relate to them. Be the voice for others!

More on making lemonade:

2. TV acting! The phone call:

You can write and perform a play based on two characters who are speaking to each other via phone, Skype or any other remote communication mean.

What will you be talking about? Will the play be funny? Will it express anger or frustration? Will it relate to our current lockdown, or will it be about something else entirely?

Ideas: Two people discussing the cancellation of prom; three people chatting about a job interview that went wrong; calling your boss to say that you are sick, meanwhile you are playing video games; a monologue where you can only hear one side of the call; the possibilities are endless.

3. Recreate Works of Art!

Inspired by our Tableau Unit (see it here), this project can be super fun and involve the whole family.

Pick three works of art. Reenact each one of them using whatever you have around the house; take a picture of your masterpiece and share it with me.

Since the drama rubric does not apply to it, please include a short reflection stating what are the names and artists that created the three paintings, as well as talking about your choices when creating your masterpiece. Check out examples below!

4. Dance!

Choose a song you like and prepare a choreography to it. You can teach it to your friends remotely, then call each other and record your screen while you all dance together.  Or, you can dance alone (or involve your dog / cat / parrot!)

5. A Musical in your House:

Create a musical to describe a mundane daily activity. You can make it sound epic, or play it down and make it sound uber boring.

6. Make your own stop-motion project!

Stop-motion is fun, theatrical and creative. If you would like to try stop motion, there are many options available online, and many stop-motion apps for phones which are free to use.

You can download an empty storyboard sheet here, to help with your planning:

7. Make up your own challenge

Did you just get here to the bottom of the page, and didn't find anything you would like to try? Do you have an EVEN BETTER idea of a project you can create that will be fun for you to do (and fun for me to watch, ha ha)?

WELL, then you have come to the right section!!!

Create your own project -- anything you want, as long as it is drama-based -- and send it to me!

I am looking forward to seeing all
of your amazing projects!
