Grade 8s

This is your art lab, your idea starter, the place for you to get sparks for your creativity.

Although I have a few core ideas for projects at the bottom of the page, what path you choose to complete those projects are up to you, and totally dependent on what kinds of materials you have available in your home, what you love doing, and what you may be curious about learning.

You can also COME UP WITH YOUR OWN PROJECT and send it to me.

Projects incorporate the elements of art and design. Your reflections will have to incorporate these notions. Please refer to the links below to see explanations of the Elements and Principles of Art and Design.

Principles of Design

One thing to consider is, what materials will you be using to create your art?
It all depends on what you have available. Below, you will see a list of materials. That is your first step in creating your art. If you have anything else at home, that is great! Crayons, pens, watercolour, any material is fair game.

STEP ONE: Choose a material

These are just ideas. If you have other materials at home, that is also great!
Crayons, pens, watercolour, anything you may have is fair game.

more ideas will be added every week

The rubric for our projects is VERY open, as you can see below. All I ask is that you do your best on your art piece, and write a short reflection explaining your choices.

STEP TWO: Choose a project

More projects will be added every week. To get started, check out the projects below!

1. The Weebly Portfolio

You could start your journey by creating a personal Weebly website as a portfolio.

This is where you will keep all your beautiful drawings and creations for the rest of the year and beyond; this could follow you all the way to high school and even further.

Your portfolio will be public, so please follow the rules regarding posting work online.

Every time you finish a piece of art for our class, you should place it in your portfolio. Weebly has an app so you can upload things straight from your phone onto it, or you can upload from your computer.

If this is too much for you at the moment, start with one of the easier projects below. Just make sure to save your pictures so that eventually you can complete a portfolio for the year-end marking and showcase. This can be done on Weebly or on Google Slides.

2. The Lemonade Project

Interested in making lemonade, and helping change the world with your art?

Then, follow along to our Artivism page! Click here for more!

3. Benefits project

There is always something positive about any bad situation! In this project, you will think about some of the benefits you have experienced while staying at home. You will create a triptych (click here to see what that is --  triptych) depicting these three benefits. You can choose any material you wish in order to complete this project.
The one requirement for this project is that all three images must be done using the same medium. For instance, if you choose photography, then you must use it for every one of the three images; if you select watercolour, then you must use it for all three.

Please include a short reflection explaining your choices and your images.

4. Redesign a Cover Art

So, you are done with a project and are thinking of something new to do?

WORRY NOT!!! How about this fun project to redesign a cover art taking into account our current times?

Check out the samples below -- all of them were done by kids like you!

To do this project, simply find a book, a CD or a game, or anything else that has a cover, and try to redesign it considering the socioeconomic climate of our current times.

This may take longer than a week to complete -- please remember to submit your progress pictures as one of your assignments!

Still looking for something?

If nothing up above made you excited or interested, don't worry!

You can just create a project all on your own! Anything you want to explore!!!

I also used to teach AP art and I have an amazing challenge sheet for you.

That's right -- this challenge sheet was the same challenge sheet I gave my grade 12s who were working towards their AP course in drawing and painting!

Look through these challenges, pick one of them and work on it as you would any other project.

I hope you have fun with it:
